WhatPort is a small macOS menu bar app that shows what each USB-C and Thunderbolt port on your Mac is doing. This page explains what data the app handles.

WhatPort is published by Bitmoor Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 17133695, with its registered office at Unit A478, 4-6 Greatorex Street, London, United Kingdom, E1 5NF. Bitmoor Ltd is the data controller for the limited personal data described below. If you buy WhatPort Pro, the terms and conditions also apply.

What WhatPort reads

WhatPort reads USB-C port state, Thunderbolt link information, the SMC power channels, and the USB-PD power contract from your Mac through Apple's IOKit framework. Every one of those reads is unprivileged, and all of it stays on your Mac. It is used only to draw the port list and detail panels you see in the menu bar.

What WhatPort sends

The free app makes one network request: an update check against the public GitHub Releases API, every six hours. That request carries a User-Agent header naming the app and your installed version (for example, WhatPort/1.6.0) and nothing else. If a newer version exists you get a banner, and the release is downloaded only when you click Update.

No analytics, no telemetry, no identifiers. The source is on GitHub if you want to check.

WhatPort Pro (purchase and licensing)

WhatPort Pro is an optional paid upgrade that unlocks the Flight Recorder. Buying it and keeping it activated involves personal data the free app never touches.

• Purchase. Payment is handled by Stripe. Your card details and email address are processed by Stripe under Stripe's privacy policy. WhatPort never sees or stores your card details.
• Licence delivery. Your licence key is emailed to the address you bought it with.
• Activation and validation. When you activate a key, and once each time the app launches afterwards, WhatPort sends your licence key and your Mac's hardware UUID (the IOPlatformUUID) to the licensing server at www.whatport.app/api/validate to confirm the licence and enforce the two-Mac limit. If the server cannot be reached, Pro keeps working offline for up to 30 days.
• What the licence server stores. Your licence key, the email address you bought it with, and the hardware UUID of each Mac the key has been activated on (up to two), so one key cannot be used on more machines than allowed.
• Support. If you email support, we hold the email address and whatever you send us (typically a licence key or Stripe receipt number) for as long as it takes to sort the problem out.

Removing the key in the app deletes it from that Mac. The free app makes none of these calls.

What the Flight Recorder stores

The Flight Recorder writes port events and power samples to a local database at ~/Library/Application Support/WhatPort/flight-recorder.db. It stays on your Mac. Nothing in it is uploaded, and it leaves your machine only if you export a session to JSON or CSV yourself. Delete the file and the history is gone.

What WhatPort stores

WhatPort keeps your preferences (window mode, port count, font size, notification and recorder settings) in the standard macOS user defaults system, on your Mac. With Pro, your licence key is stored there too so you do not have to re-enter it.

What WhatPort does not do

Outside the Pro purchase and licensing described above, WhatPort does not collect, store, or transmit:

• Personal information (name, email, address, phone number).
• Account or device identifiers.
• Browsing or app usage analytics.
• Information about other apps or files on your Mac.
• Anything about the devices you plug in, beyond drawing them in the app.
